Former Penguins first-round pick signs a new deal to continue his career overseas
Tonight, news has broken that former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Simon Despres has signed a new contract to continue his pro hockey career.
The hockey season is in full swing and by now most players have found new homes to continue their professional career.
While this is generally the case, some players have taken their process to sign a new contract slower looking for the right opportunity to showcase themselves best.
This has been the case for 34-year-old Simon Despres who to this point in the season was playing in the LNAH with the Saint-Hyacinthe Battalion.
Now, Despres has decided to pursue a brand new opportunity signing a deal with the Fife Flyers of the EIHL.
Former Penguins defenseman to continue his career in Scotland
According to an announcement made yesterday by the Fife Flyers, Despres will be signing a contract for the remainder of the season.
This will be Despres' third stint in the EIHL having spent parts of the last two seasons with the Nottingham Panthers and the Glasgow Clan.
Despres during his NHL career played six seasons and 193 total games with the Penguins and the Anaheim Ducks.
Despres was never really able to find his place within the Penguins lineup to become a key contributor despite many chances over his four seasons in Pittsburgh before being shipped off to Anaheim.
Despite his lack of success in the NHL, Despres has carved out a good career for himself overseas traveling the world and even winning multiple championships.
As Despres continues on his hockey journey it will be interesting to see what kind of role he can carve out with his new club the Fife Flyers.
