People doubted Kyle Dubas when he selected Ben Kindel in the first round of the 2025 NHL Entry Draft, who has been so good that he could win something very special.

It was a surprise to many observers that the Pittsburgh Penguins would open the season at 9-5-3, but they've managed this feat by integrating veteran experience with an infusion of young blood, with the star performer by far being 18-year-old rookie phenom and 11th overall draft choice, Ben Kindel.
He was selected in the 2025 Entry Draft, and they've inserted directly into their starting lineup. The selection of Kindel stunned on Draft night, and even more so when he made the Opening Night lineup.

What Ben Kindel has done to prove the doubters wrong

However, over 15 games, he has proven all doubters wrong with five goals and two assists, with a level of maturity that is unheard of among this age group.
Kindel impressed last week in a 4-3 defeat to Toronto, as he registered two goals, seven shots, and positively influenced his line, featuring Tommy Novak and Ville Koivunen, with dominating possession metrics.
Kindel has seen lineup turnover due to injuries, but he has excelled no matter what the circumstances, whether manning the middle of the third line or flanked by Sidney Crosby and Bryan Rust as part of the top unit.

Why Ben Kindel is making everyone believe again

The 18-year-old has even seen ice time with the man advantage, demonstrating the smarts and experience of a veteran player, reading the play and making contributions defensively.
Having completed his nine-game tryout, Kindel is now a part of the program to stay.
Kindel exudes a degree of class and two-way smarts, making him a viable contender for the Calder Trophy, alongside other serious candidates like the young star of the Islanders, Matthew Schaefer.
When Kyle Dubas drafted Kindel, many questioned that decision as a reach, but now, this move seems brilliant. The rookie, if he continues this pace, will surely be the revelation, but maybe he will even win an award by the end of the season.
