There was some sad news out of the Pittsburgh Penguins organization on Monday as former goaltender Greg Millen sadly passed away.
In a season rocked with several tragic and unfortunate passings, including that of both Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, as well as former players Stephen Peat and Mark Laforest; it's been a rough go in terms of tragedies this year.
Well sadly, the NHL can add another name to the list, as former Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender, and CBC broadcaster Greg Millen sadly passed away suddenly on Monday, the NHL Alumni Association announced.
A brief excerpt from the post reads as follows:
It is with heavy hearts we share the sudden passing of Greg Millen today.
He played 14 seasons between the pipes in the National Hockey League for six teams: the Pittsburgh Penguins, Hartford Whalers, St. Louis Blues, Quebec Nordiques, Chicago Blackhawks, and Detroit Red Wings. Over his NHL career, Millen appeared in more than 600 regular-season games.
After retiring from professional play, Millen transitioned to broadcasting. He began by covering the Ottawa Senators during their inaugural season in 1992-93.
His broadcasting career includes roles as a colour commentator for CBC's Hockey Night in Canada and the NHL on Sportsnet, where he worked alongside Hockey Night in Canada Greats Bob Cole, Harry Neale, Don Cherry, Ron MacLean and Jim Hughson.
Millen is survived by his wife and four children. There is no news on the reason for his sudden passing, but it's a tragic event nonetheless.
During his playing career,
Millen skated in 604 games and posted a 215-284-89 record with a 3.88 GAA and .873 SV%. His best season came in 1988-89 with the Blues, where he had a 22-20-7 record with a 3.38 GAA and .879 SV%.
In 2014, Millen earned a master's degree in leadership from the University of Guelph, working with the Seattle Kraken as well as teaching at Fleming College in Peterborough; the place where he honed his craft in the OHL.
We here at Hockey Unplugged would like to offer the family, friends, and colleagues of Greg Millen our sincere condolences. May they find peace during this difficult time.
