NHL insider Elliotte Friedman has provided a new update in the multi-billion-dollar Penguins sale, saying there is a lot more to it than what meets the eye.

Mario Lemieux could be plotting a third act to rescue the Penguins after news broke on Wednesday that Lemieux, along with Ron Burkle and David Morehouse, was contemplating buying the team back from Fenway Sports Group (FSG).
The three, the original owners of the Penguins, created the winning culture, had better relations with the community, and were incredibly well-respected across the NHL.
Their potential return has generated buzz, especially considering FSG's catastrophic relationship with the fanbase since the acquisition of the team.

The Penguins have not made the playoffs in 3 straight seasons under FSG ownership

The Penguins have not qualified for the playoffs in three straight seasons under FSG and appear a far cry from relevancy.
NHL insider Elliotte Friedman revealed today that what started out as an initial ownership transfer might turn out to be a direct full-scale sale.
"The hockey business world, as it is, is skeptical, they think this began as a minority sale deal, but let's just put it this way, they wouldn't be surprised if it ends up being a bigger or full scale".

There are those who are suspicious that FSG might be positioning themselves to make another huge purchase, something which would require them to sell the Penguins in order to raise the funds.
Lemieux was never anything but one who was committed to the franchise. His on- and off-ice existence in Pittsburgh cannot be replicated. He'd likely not complain about assisting in changing the course for the Penguins.
Whether or not a buyback is actually plausible is something that only time will provide an answer to. But the possibility of Lemieux returning home to guide the franchise is something that many people around the organization hope comes to fruition.
