This evening, Penguins insider Josh Yohe has provided a new update on extension talks between Evgeni Malkin and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Evgeni Malkin is currently in the final season of his four year contract with the Penguins.
To this point reports had indicated that Kyle Dubas and the Penguins were not interested in re-signing Malkin beyond this season.
Even with the Penguins apprehension to re-sign him, Malkin is still committed to playing beyond this season and has hoped to sign again in Pittsburgh for another season.
Tonight, Penguins reporter and insider Josh Yohe has discussed the latest details regarding extension talks between Malkin and the Penguins front office.

Yohe first reiterates his intial report that the Penguins did not intend to extend Malkin coming into the year.
I reported last summer that the Penguins had no intention of giving Malkin a new contract. At the time, that was 100 percent the case. I can't emphasize this enough.

However, with Malkin's recent success Yohe believes that Dubas and the Penguins' camp could reconsider their stance heading into the trade deadline.
Malkin has had a terrific season and is clearly playing at a higher level than he did last season. So, does this change things for Kyle Dubas and the rest of the Penguins' brass?

As for what is next, the Penguins are expected to re-open talks with Malkin in February as the NHL goes on break for the Olympic Games.

With the meeting set for February, all Penguins fans can do for now is wait and hope that the two sides agree to an extension before Malkin becomes an unrestricted free agent on July 1st.
As more information is provided on Malkin's future in Pittsburgh and beyond we will pass all of those details along to you.
