'It's All or Nothing': Mario Lemieux's Ownership Group Sends Clear Ultimatum to Penguins Owners

Mario Lemieux wants to return as the Penguins owner, and now the franchise legend has made his intentions clear to current owners Fenway Sports Group, per Josh Yohe.
For the past few weeks now, it's become clear that Mario Lemieux has every intention of pushing to buy back the Pittsburgh Penguins, for years after selling the majority stake to Fenway Sports Group.
Things haven't been moving very quickly on that front, but in his latest report, The Athletic's Josh Yohe has revealed the ultimatum that the franchise icon has given FSG as he looks to take back ownership of his beloved team.
However, sources close to Lemieux have made it clear that Lemieux and Burkle are not interested in becoming minority owners with FSG. It's all or nothing for the two men who owned the Penguins from 1999 through 2021.

Still, sources say the living legend is eager to return to the NHL and have indicated that league commissioner Gary Bettman, who long enjoyed a strong relationship with Lemieux, Burkle and Morehouse while they ran the Penguins, is aware of the trio's interest in reclaiming primary ownership.

Mario Lemieux is 'All In' on a Return To be Penguins Owner Once More
After owning the Penguins from 1999 to 2021, the group led by Lemieux have made it clear that they aren't trying to be minority owners, but instead want to once again have the majority control of the organization.
That may work with FSG, a team that also own the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC, and while there's been little movement on this front so far, with Lemieux being aggressive in his pursuit of majority ownership, something big is going to happen soon, with fans hoping they'll have an answer before the 2025/26 season.
