Per a new report from The Athletic, Mario Lemieux and his ownership group are interested in buying back their majority stake in the Pittsburgh Penguins from the Fenway Sports Group.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are in place today thanks in large part to former captain and lasting franchise icon Mario Lemieux, who was not only one of the best players in NHL history but who also later save them from certain relocation.
Eventually, Lemieux sold most of his controlling share in the team in 2021 to the Fenway Sports Group, who also owns Fenway Sports Group, who also owns Premier League's Liverpool and Major League Baseball's Boston Red Sox.
In June, NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun recently said that Lemieux along with Ron Burkle and David Morehouse are interested in buying back back the club from the Fenway Sports Group.
Hearing from sources that the group of Ron Burkle, Mario Lemieux and David Morehouse are investigating the possibility of buying back the Penguins from Fenway Sports. Burkle and Lemieux sold the Penguins to Fenway in 2021. Fenway has been looking to sell a partial share. Will be interesting to see where this goes
But in a statement, a Fenway Sports Group spokesperson said that they are not interested in selling back the team.
We've seen the speculation, and as we've previously shared with media, Fenway Sports Group is currently engaged in a process to explore a potential minority investment in the Pittsburgh Penguins. The focus is on identifying a small, passive partner, and that is the current framework under discussion with potential investors.

The Penguins have now missed the postseason for the last 3 years, and sold the lowest percentage of available tickets for home games since 2004, the year prior to Sidney Crosby being selected 1st overall in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
