Major Coaching Update Emerges for the Pittsburgh Penguins, per Elliotte Friedman
Mitch Love has been a name on the Penguins radar for their next Head Coach, and now, with Kyle Dubas returning, it appears he is firming as the favourite.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been waiting to begin the interview process to replace Mike Sullivan with Kyle Dubas in Sweden at the World Championships, but now that's over, it appears as though things could start to heat up in the next week.
In the time Dubas has been gone, the likes of New York, Vancouver, Anaheim and Philadelphia have all filled their vacancies at the Head Coach position, leaving Pittsburgh with very few options.
One name we've heard a lot about has been Washington Capitals assistant Mitch Love, who was the Head Coach of the AHL's Calgary Wranglers before that, and according to all reports, he's well respected and liked in Pittsburgh.
Now, Elliotte Friedman has given the latest update on the Penguins search, revealing that Love will get an extended interview with the team this week, noting that he's the most likely candidate for the role.
At 40-years of age, this would be a very young hire for the Penguins, but after having a veteran like Mike Sullivan for years, it could be a potentially good switchup for the team, even if he is just a few years older than star players like
Sidney Crosby and
Evgeni Malkin.
In just a few seasons in the AHL, Love showed how he could transform a team and be a fantastic leader, and while it's unclear how that will translate to the NHL, it's only a matter of time until he lands a Head Coach role, and all signs are now pointing to the Penguins hiring him to be their next Head Coach.
