Mario Lemieux wants to buy back the Penguins from Fenway Sports Group, but now, Elliotte Friedman has revealed the major competition he's now facing.
Over the past few months, it's become official that former Penguins superstar and owner Mario Lemieux
wants to buy the team back, with Fenway Sports Group seemingly interested in moving on from majority ownership.
Thus far, there's been whispers that there is competition to purchase the iconic NHL franchise, but to this point, we've not heard much about who the other potential buyers are.
Elliotte Friedman reveals billionaire family eyeing the Penguins
Currently, the Hoffmann family are the owners of the ECHL's Florida Everblades, and even with the price of the team expected to rise to at least $1.75 billion, the family are in a great spot to buy the team with a reported net worth well beyond that asking price.
Now, the race to purchase the Penguins is officially on, and with current owners Fenway Sports Group purchasing the team for $900 million from the Lemieux led group back in 2021, it's no surprise that they're willing to sell with the price of NHL teams now.
It's unclear as of right now who the favourite is and how far talks around the potential sale of the Penguins has gone, but with two very wealthy and interested groups pushing hard to be the new owners in Pittsburgh, the race is expected to heat up in the coming months.
