The NHL has announced major changes, and now one of them may force Pittsburgh Penguins GM Kyle Dubas to make moves sooner, rather than later.
The NHL and NHLPA have agreed upon a new CBA, and as a result, there are many changes coming to the NHL in the near future, including less LTIR loopholes, a longer season and many, many other changes.
For now though, the biggest one for the Penguins involves potential trades, as the NHL have made changes to double retention on a player during trades, and it will directly effect this team moving forward.
Double Retention on Trades to be Banned as of December 21st; Months Ahead of the Trade Deadline
According to reports from
The Hockey Writers, double retention on trades will be banned as of December 21st, with players needing to be on a roster 75 days before they can be traded and retained.
«It was announced that a player must be on a roster for 75 days before they could be traded and salary retained. Dec. 21 falls 75 days before the deadline, and I think this means teams may trade for a player way before the deadline.»
What that means for Dubas and the Penguins is that if they want to potentially get double retention involved in any deals, a move will need to be made before that time, as it could allow them to facilitate more moves to get more future assets in return moving forward.
As of right now, the team have shown little aggressiveness in looking to move their veteran players, but with the season approaching and retention in mind, things might start picking up soon, and if the team are heading towards a rebuild as expected, they need to take advantage of this while they can.
