Rutger McGroarty made a huge impact in his first professional season last year, and now, after an early injury, he's set to make his Penguins season debut on Monday.
In the summer of 2024, the Pittsburgh Penguins made the move to acquire Rutger McGroarty from the Winnipeg Jets, as the former first-round pick immediately became the franchise's top prospect.
While he started in the American Hockey League, McGroarty made his debut with the NHL team in 2024/25, posting 1 goal and 3 points in the 8 games he was given at the end of the season.
McGroarty to make season debut on Monday
He was expected to begin the 2025/26 campaign as a key piece of the team's top-six, but unfortunately, a pre-season injury has kept him out for the first six weeks of the new campaign before he returned to the AHL and the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
Recently,
he addressed not being called up to the NHL despite posting 4 goals and 7 points in 5 games in the AHL this season, but now that's set to change, with Dan Muse officially revealing he's set to make his NHL season debut on Monday night against the Philadelphia Flyers.
This is a much deserved reward for McGroarty, who has done everything asked of him since arriving in Pittsburgh, and with Kevin Hayes and Tommy Novak both currently in the top-six, McGroarty may have the chance to unseat one of them for that role.
McGroarty will now be the 10th rookie to appear in a game for the Penguins already this season, and with the likes of Ville Koivunen and Ben Kindel already playing their roles, it's safe to say that the future is very bright in Pittsburgh.
