Joona Koppanen back with WBS Penguins as Pittsburgh Penguins shuffle roster and AHL depth
The Penguins re-assigned forward Joona Koppanen to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on Tuesday, a quick flip after a brief NHL stint.
These moves always look boring on the surface, but they usually scream one thing, Pittsburgh wants extra flexibility day to day.
Koppanen is 27, a big 6 foot 5 left shot who can play center or wing, and he was drafted by the Boston Bruins in 2016, fifth round, 135th overall.
In the NHL this season he's at 10 games with 0 goals, 1 assist, 1 point, the kind of stat line that tells you he's been living in the low event minutes.
Last season with Pittsburgh he played 11 games, scored 1 goal, and averaged 13:23 per night, then dropped to the AHL and kept chugging.
This is the social post that kicked off the latest round of chatter.
On the ice, Koppanen's value is simple, straight lines, heavy walls, and a net front body that can make life annoying for defensemen on dump ins.
Off the ice, it's the contract math too, he's on a one year deal with a $775,000 NHL cap hit, so the club can move him without creating chaos.
Joona Koppanen move tests Pittsburgh Penguins depth
As a fan, I get the frustration, it feels like the roster is always in a blender, but this is also how you survive a long season without burning your top six.
Wilkes-Barre is where Koppanen can actually stack minutes, take tough matchups, and be ready for the next phone call instead of sitting 9 minutes between shifts.
He put up 8 goals, 15 assists, and 23 points in 56 AHL games last year, which is solid production for a big bottom six type.
When the Penguins dress him, it's usually about structure, safe routes, clean changes, and making sure the fourth line doesn't get caved in.
The timing matters too, because a reassignment like this often frees a roster spot for a different need, an extra defenseman for travel, or a different forward look for the next opponent.
If injuries hit again up front, Koppanen is the kind of call-up who won't wow you, but he won't blow up your line either, and coaches trust that.
This is the type of transaction you forget in a week, until the next close game when the Penguins need one safe shift late and the depth chart suddenly matters.
