The Pittsburgh Penguins are likely shifting towards a re-tool this summer, and as a part of that, Josh Yohe reports they may look to trade Erik Karlsson.

Over the past two years, the Pittsburgh Penguins have been trying to put a contender around Sidney Crosby, but after this year marks three straight without an appearance in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, it appears they may be changing tactics.
That comes from reports that claim the Penguins are looking to re-tool around Crosby, which would involve moving away from some veterans, and unsurprisingly, fans and analysts have identified Erik Karlsson as a potential veteran to move.
Now, according to Josh Yohe of The Athletic, the chances of moving Karlsson this off-season are very good, and while it may need Pittsburgh to retain money to get a deal done, it's still worthwhile for the team, especially if they can find a young player to fill that same role.
«I believe there is a real chance Karlsson is dealt this summer, partially because of all the players who are signed to what many would consider «bad contracts,» he's still the most moveable.

At times, Karlsson is horrific in the defensive zone, but that's not new. Karlsson's brilliance is in his offensive ability at even strength, and he still has that. Put him on the proper team, and he will still produce and make talented forwards better.

The Penguins may have to retain money to move him. They probably would have to, but some teams will be interested in Karlsson's services this summer. Karlsson still has a full no-trade clause, which makes things murky. But if the right dance partner is available, and if Karlsson is willing, the Penguins will consider it.»
Sure, Karlsson hasn't been all bad in Pittsburgh, but the team are looking to build for the future, and if the right move is out there, it's one that they desperately need to make.
Ultimately, this seems like a move that would benefit both parties in the summer, and with some intriguing young names in the organization and some great future assets, if the Penguins can do this re-tool right, it will set them on a path of success for years to come.
