Penguins Insider Josh Yohe Reveals the Unexpected Big-Ticket Free Agent Kyle Dubas May Sign
NHL insider Josh Yohe recently revealed the unexpected big-ticket free agent that Penguins GM Kyle Dubas must target this summer, and that's Vladislav Gavrikov.
As part of recent reports, 'The Athletic' requested that its NHL staff name one UFA each club should sign this offseason. The Pittsburgh Penguins' selection by insider
Josh Yohe was a surprise.
Having missed the playoffs for the third consecutive year, the Penguins are sure to be busy this offseason.
The Penguins desperately need help on the left side of their blue line
On their left side of defense is one prominent area of need, and Yohe thinks that perhaps the solution lies with Los Angeles Kings defenseman Vladislav Gavrikov.
"Gavrikov, a steady and dependable player, would help and fit well on the left side of the Penguins' blue line. Plus, he's only 29."
- Josh Yohe
At 29, Gavrikov is a hard-bodied, left-handed shooting defenseman who would instantly upgrade Pittsburgh's defense. If he goes to the open market, he'll be among the best available defensemen.
Based on the Penguins' current depth chart,
Gavrikov would probably be their best left-side defenseman.
He had an elite year in Los Angeles, tallying five goals, 30 points, 140 blocks, and a plus-26 rating. His steady two-way play and penalty-killing ability would make him an ideal candidate for a top-pairing spot in Pittsburgh.
For a team eager to get back in the mix, adding a stay-at-home defenseman like Gavrikov would be the Penguins' best option. If he hits free agency on July 1, the whole league will be holding its breath to see if Kyle Dubas acts.
