Pittsburgh Penguins Rutger McGroarty, Joona Koppanen roster moves hit on Sunday.

The Penguins recalled Joona Koppanen from Wilkes, while activating Rutger McGroarty from injured reserve and re-assigning him to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton.
It's a clean swap that tells you what the staff wants right now.
McGroarty is healthy enough to move again, but not quite back into NHL risk, after his concussion stint.
Yahoo reported he was cleared for contact Saturday, and the Penguins still chose minutes over a quick return.
And those minutes matter, because McGroarty was crushing in the AHL before he got hurt.
He has 7 points in 5 AHL games, and he's also played 16 NHL games this season with 3 points.

Rutger McGroarty reshapes Pittsburgh Penguins depth chart

As a fan, I like this move, because it feels patient instead of panicked.
McGroarty is 21, and he was the 14th pick in 2022, so the development plan should be the headline, not a short-term patch.
His cap hit is $950,000 on his entry-level deal, which makes him easy to carry, but not worth rushing.
Koppanen is the opposite kind of call-up, steady and simple.
He has 11 points in 22 AHL games and 1 point in 10 NHL games, and he tends to play the kind of straight-line shifts coaches trust when the lineup gets messy.
He's also a cheap, flexible option, on a one-year deal with a $775,000 cap hit, and he can become a UFA after the season.
That's why he keeps getting these short NHL looks when the schedule tightens.
The real subtext is workload and roles.
Pittsburgh can keep McGroarty playing big minutes in every situation in Wilkes, and still have Koppanen ready for a fourth-line center shift or a penalty-kill rep in the NHL.
If the Penguins want McGroarty back soon, the next milestone is easy to spot.
Let him stack a few healthy, hard games in the AHL, then bring him up when the confidence and the body are both fully there.
