The Pittsburgh Penguins have had an intriguing few years, and with September now here, the 2025/26 season is almost upon us with many major storylines.

Despite all of the speculation, it's been a long, quiet summer for the Pittsburgh Penguins, with the team heading into the new seasons with more questions than answers over their future.
With so many veterans that are likely to be moved out in the near future, this season is going to be one of change for the Penguins, and under Dan Muse, the new season is almost upon us as the team deals with plenty of intriguing storylines.

Prospects McGroarty and Koivunen Battle for Roster Spots

Perhaps the most exciting storyline however is the future of the organization, with players like Rutger McGroarty and Ville Koivunen both heading into the new season looking to make themselves into top-six players for the Penguins both now and in the future.
On top of that, the likes of Owen Pickering, Harrison Brunicke, Tristan Broz, Sam Poulin and Vasily Ponomarev are all battling to make their way into the National Hockey League, with the goaltending battle between Joel Blomqvist and Arturs Silovs to define the pre-season as well.

Could This Be Evgeni Malkin's Last Ride in Pittsburgh?

Over the past two decades, this Penguins team has been defined by the duo of Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, but heading into 2025/26, it appears it will be the final one in the storied season of the Russian superstar.
That means that this pre-season may be the last opportunity for many to get up close and personal with Malkin and see him in a Penguins uniform, and while his future remains unclear, Penguins fans will need to cherish the time they've got left with their star forward, giving them a chance to bid farewell to a franchise icon.
