Kristopher Letang has been an icon in Pittsburgh for so long, but according to recent reports, the team have admitted that his best days are far behind him.

The Pittsburgh Penguins have won three Stanley Cups with their current core, and while captain Sidney Crosby continues to thrive, the same can't be said for the other key veteran pieces on this team.
Mainly, Kris Letang, who struggled for much of 2024/25, posting just 9 goals and 30 points in 74 games played, including a very poor -15 differential, leading many fans to call him out for declining in a big way at age 38.
That is reportedly something the Penguins have now come to accept in recent times, as a report from Josh Yohe of The Athletic reveals that the team are now accepting that he's no longer fit to be a top pairing defenseman in the NHL.
"And as gathered from general sentiment throughout the organization - the Penguins realize that Kris Letang's role as a top-pair defenseman are likely behind him."

This report comes just days after TSN's Pierre LeBrun revealed the Penguins to be the only true sellers in the NHL this off-season, with even the worst teams around the league beyond Pittsburgh looking to add pieces this summer.
With those two reports combined, one would not be shocked to hear if GM Kyle Dubas tries to shop Letang this off-season, as he could be a very valuable second pairing defenseman for a contender over the next few years, even if he's not capable of being a star at this point in his career.
Ultimately though, the Penguins could keep the franchise legend after all that he's done since arriving in 2006/07, but unless he accepts this decision from the Penguins as well, there could be some problems moving forward.
