Penguins' Sidney Crosby Receives Special Surprise From Pirates' Jack Wilson and Son
In 2023-24, Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was surprised with a special gift from former Pittsburgh Pirate All-Star shortstop Jack Wilson and his son, Jacob Wilson, who now plays for the Athletics.
Pittsburgh Penguins longtime captain Sidney Crosby will forever be one of the most beloved professional athletes in Steel City, and another notable former Pittsburgh sports figure recently got the chance to meet up with him.
In 2023-24, former Pittsburgh Pirates All-Star shortstop and his son Jacob Wilson, who plays for the Athletics, attended a Penguins home game at PPG Paints Arena and later gifted Crosby with an autographed jersey and bat.
It was a thank-you, a full decade after the younger Wilson had gotten a personal tour of the Penguins' locker room from Crosby in 2014.
Jack spoke about how much Crosby's career has meant to sports fans in Pittsburgh while also saying they've been fans of his since the start of his career.
We were fans from the get-go, and he's been so amazing to watch his career and bring home a couple of Stanley Cups. But that interaction with him, and Jacob's wall with the sticks hanging on it since he was a little guy it's really cool to be back and be able to kind of repay that favor. He means a lot to a lot of Pittsburghers, for sure, but especially for us.
The future of Crosby with the Penguins remains the subject of debate, as he's signed for another 2 years but is thought to potentially request a trade from Pittsburgh to chase 1 more Stanley Cup before he retires.
The current Penguins aren't expected to come close to competing for a postseason spot, and Crosby could decide that he wants out if the losing they're expected to experience starts to weigh on him.
