Pittsburgh Penguins activate defenseman who has been sidelined since preseason
The Penguins have activated defenseman Jack St. Ivany, who has been sidelined since the preseason and has not played a game yet this season.
The Pittsburgh Penguins made defenseman Jack St. Ivany active and removed him from the season-opening injured reserve after he recovered from a preseason foot injury.
What Jack St. Ivany was doing prior to his activation
Prior to being sent back to the NHL active roster, St. Ivany had been with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton on a conditioning loan. During five AHL appearances before American Thanksgiving, he had a goal and five points with a +3 rating.
The performance ensured that he was ready for a spot on Pittsburgh's blueline. His presence brings a total of nine defensemen for the Penguins.
The Penguins featured six defensemen in their previous game and sat out Harrison Brunicke, Matt Dumba, and St. Ivany. Brunicke is included on Team Canada's preliminary list for the 2026 World Junior Championship tournament.
His presence at the tournament will offset an opening spot for an additional player in December. The tournament takes place after Christmas, with seven games set before then for Pittsburgh.
The players that continue to be injured for the Penguins
First and foremost, injuries have continued to plague the Penguins. Filip Hallander, Blake Lizotte, Evgeni Malkin, and Rickard Rakell are still on injured reserve.
As it stands, Pittsburgh currently has more depth on defense and not as much at forward as they enter December.
St. Ivany's return will provide an additional option with a right shot for coach Dan Muse as he tries to get through an upcoming schedule with several regulars still sidelined.
