NHL insider Frank Seravalli has revealed that the Fenway Sports Group has officially reached an agreement to sell the Penguins to the Hoffmann family.

Earlier this year, reports surfaced that the Hoffmann family, owners of the ECHL's Florida Everblades, had emerged as serious contenders to buy the Pittsburgh Penguins.
At the time, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman noted that the family had an exclusive window to complete a purchase, which had since expired.
The Penguins were valued at $900 million when Fenway Sports Group acquired a controlling stake in November 2021, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.
Friedman had predicted that the team could sell for around $1.75 billion, just under four years after FSG's initial purchase.
Other potential buyers, including the former ownership group of Mario Lemieux and Ron Burkle, reportedly considered re-purchasing the team, though the franchise's increased valuation may have made that option cost-prohibitive.

The initial details of the sale revealed

Now, an update has emerged: NHL insider Frank Seravalli reported that Fenway Sports Group has reached an agreement to sell the Penguins to the Hoffmann family, the Chicago-based investment group led by David Hoffmann.
The deal marks a major change in ownership for a franchise with multiple Stanley Cup titles and a storied history in Pittsburgh.
While full details of the agreement are still emerging, sources indicate an official announcement is expected in the coming days.

Why this sale is significant

With the Hoffmann family set to take control, the Penguins will enter a new chapter, building on a legacy shaped by both historic successes on the ice and a dynamic business trajectory off it.
The sale represents one of the most significant franchise transactions in recent NHL history, reflecting the growing value of one of the league's marquee teams.
