Pittsburgh Penguins Snatch Canadian Defenseman from Boston Bruins
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been quiet early in free agency, but now, they've signed a very intriguing young defenseman to a two-year deal.
The Pittsburgh Penguins weren't expected to do much buying this summer, as many believe they came into the summer looking to be one of, if not the NHL's most aggressive overall seller.
While they haven't been in on any of the top names, they've now reportedly made a solid addition, adding defenseman Parker Wotherspoon in free agency on a two-year contract.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the deal if for $1 million, with the 27-year old now likely to get his best shot at earning a full-time role in the NHL after spending time with the New York Islanders and Boston Bruins thus far in his career.
Last year with Boston, Wotherspoon appeared in 55 games, tallying a goal and 7 points in that time, but his role was simply on the third pairing with low expectations, and in Pittsburgh, it's likely to be the same.
With the team expected to move on from
Erik Karlsson, signing Wotherspoon to be on the third pairing while allowing others to expand their role could be a good move for GM Kyle Dubas, and at a cheap salary cap hit, it's easy to see why they made this move.
Ultimately, the team will still be focused on selling Karlsson,
Bryan Rust and
Rickard Rakell among others, but when you can make a cheap pickup like this to add depth to a blue line that needs it, it's certainly a low-risk move worth taking, with the team potentially able to sell him at the deadline if he starts 2025/26 well.
