Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is on track to shatter a record set by the Great One himself, Wayne Gretzky, later this year.

While the focus in the National Hockey League may be Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin's chase to break Wayne Gretzky's all-time goals record, there is another record of The Great One that could soon be broken.
Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby is on the verge of breaking Gretzky's record of 19 consecutive years of being a point per game player.
The issue was discussed on the "Spittin' Chiclets" podcast and by Crosby's former Penguins teammate, Ryan Whitney:
With all the talk about Ovi and his goal chase and how cool this story is, there is a Crosby side to this and what he's chasing. And that is that if Sid finishes this year with a point per game or better, he would break Wayne Gretzky's all-time record of 20 seasons as a point per game player or better.

Wayne did it 19 times as Sid has, so I think Sid needs 16 points to guarantee himself over a point per game again, which is just wild. I mean, 20 years in a row as a point per game or better.

That's an amazing thing to see happen, and just incredible and unfortunate to see Pittsburgh struggling so much, but to see Crosby still doing his thing.
Ovechkin is now single digits away from beating the all-time NHL goal record, and Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby recently opened up with his thoughts on it all.
The Penguins' longtime captain chose to re-sign with the club on a multi-year new contract with his usual AAV (average annual value) of $8.7 million per year, a clear nod to his sweater number of 87.
Right now, Crosby has 68 points (21G, 47A) in 64 games played this year, scoring at a point per game pace and on track to break Gretzky's record of 19 consecutive years.
