Rutger McGroarty's Pittsburgh Penguins season ended due to injury, but now, it appears he may be ready for the AHL and the Calder Cup Playoffs sooner, rather than later.
The Pittsburgh Penguins may have a star of the future in Rutger McGroarty, and while he played well for the team down the stretch, he unfortunately suffered a season ending injury.
That is, the NHL season however, as there was speculation he could return for the AHL Playoffs with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, although Head Coach Mike Sullivan didn't seem too optimistic.
Now, the latest update on his status seems incredibly positive, as he is officially out of his walking boot, and while he revealed he may not be ready for the start of the Calder Cup Playoffs, he did note that he should be available shortly after.
This would be a major development for the Penguins, who would love to see their young prospects get a taste of post-season action, and with the team eliminated from the Stanley Cup Playoffs, getting some action in the AHL would be the next best thing for this team.
In 60 games played in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton this season, McGroarty put up a very promising 14 goals and 39 points, and at the age of 21, he's certainly still the most promising player for the future of this organization.
For now, his development has been fantastic in his first professional season, and with the hopes that he could return for a deep post-season run in the AHL, it could do him wonders as he looks to win a spot in Pittsburgh's top six around
Sidney Crosby and
Bryan Rust for the 2025/26 season and beyond.
