NHL insider David Pagnotta stated something shocking, which is that the Penguins are ready to sell everybody in trades, but for Sidney Crosby, it would take a lot.
Kyle Dubas is ready to rebuild the Pittsburgh Penguins in advance of Sidney Crosby's last stretch of competitiveness. With the clock ticking down and the team gradually getting further away from being competitive, however, it's a mighty tall order.
The Penguins are stockpiling picks, having owned 13 in the 2025 NHL Draft that passed and an NHL-record 17 in the first three rounds in the next three drafts. That number could swell even further if Pittsburgh trades one of its star veterans.
Erik Karlsson, Rickard Rakell, and Bryan Rust remain the targets of trade rumors. No trades are pending, but there is still anticipation that at least one will be traded. Bryan Rust, in particular, allegedly carries a "sky-high" price tag.
The only plausible way for Pittsburgh to add more young, NHL-ready players before the 2025-26 season is through trades.
David Pagnotta's comments have stirred up the trade pot once again
And while trade rumors had let up in recent weeks, NHL insider David Pagnotta fueled speculation, saying the Penguins are open to trading nearly anyone, even Crosby, but he would only be given up at a staggeringly high cost.
"Pittsburgh, yeah they're selling everybody, almost, no Crosby's not getting traded; they're willing to sell, but it's a high price."
- David Pagnotta
Kyle Dubas can put reason aside and start selling. Not selling would be failing to take a stand for an actual rebuild, and with contention not being on the table, the Penguins must start building for the future in the here and now.
