Top Penguins Insider Josh Yohe Reveals Timeline for Head Coaching Hire
The Penguins desperately need a new coach, and even with names flying off the board, it doesn't appear we'll be getting an answer for a few weeks.
This off-season already, three of the big name coaches available for the Pittsburgh Penguins have come off the board, with David Carle, Joel Quenneville and Rick Tocchet all finding their homes for the upcoming season.
After moving on from Mike Sullivan, the Penguins had hoped they could land a big name to be their newest bench boss, but now, their options are becoming slimmer by the day.
According to reports, the team have talked with DJ Smith about a potential role, with the likes of Mitch Love, Todd Nelson and Manny Malhotra all options as first time NHL Head Coaches that seem to intrigue the Penguins.
As for a timeline on when we may get our answers, top Penguins Insider Josh Yohe has revealed we likely won't know until later this month, with Kyle Dubas still in Sweden for the 2025 IIHF World Championship, but when he returns, he's reportedly going to take his time to get to know candidates.
I sense that the Penguins probably won't have a new coach until late this month for two reasons: the logistics of Dubas being in Sweden and Dubas not entering the process with one coach in mind. He wants to take his time getting to know candidates before he makes up his mind.
After losing out on three of their top targets, the Penguins can likely afford to take their time now, with no clear favourite of the remaining candidates, but with Boston and Seattle both still looking for a Head Coach, they can't be too patient with their search.
Ultimately, the patience Pittsburgh have shown thus far may have cost them a top candidate for their vacant position, but Dubas doesn't appear worried as he will continue to take his time until they find the right option.
