Top Penguins Trade Target Signs Extension With Canadian Team
Connor Zary has locked in a new deal with the Flames, and now, that leaves the Penguins with one less young trade target this off-season.
This off-season, the Pittsburgh Penguins and GM Kyle Dubas were keeping their eyes on the league, with many expecting them to try and add young, NHL ready talent to this roster.
Names that they were linked too included Bowen Byram, Mason McTavish, Marco Rossi and Connor Zary, but now, the third of those four has officially been taken off the board.
Why Zary's Extension in Calgary Removes a Potential Penguins Trade Target
At 23-years of age with 117 NHL games under his belt thus far, scoring 27 goals and 61 points in that time, Zary has proven that he has the talent to be a genuine star at the NHL level, and now, he's agreed to a three-year extension with the Flames.
The three-year deal is worth $3.775 million per season, and given his upside and skill, this is a steal of a deal for the Flames, who will look to establish Zary as a top centre in the NHL this season.
Where Pittsburgh Could Look Next After Losing Out on Zary
Of the four names mentioned above, McTavish is the only one still available, so if the Penguins truly are looking for young, NHL ready talent that's proven themselves already, the rising Ducks star is the perfect piece to go after.
If not McTavish, options are dwindling for Kyle Dubas, and if he wants to make an addition, he may need to wait to see what he can get in a return for Rickard Rakell, Bryan Rust or Erik Karlsson before making another deal.
