According to Dave Molinari, head coach Dan Muse is finally evaluating the long-term Jake Guentzel return.

Ville Koivunen, a 22-year-old 2021 second-round pick by Carolina, currently carries a manageable $870K cap hit on his entry-level deal. His crisp passing and aggressive puck pursuit generate the controlled entries this veteran locker room absolutely requires.
That specific on-ice fit is massive as management evaluates bottom-six depth ahead of tonight's vital road trip matchup.
Molinari nailed the distinct irony of the situation before tonight's anticipated puck drop against the Hurricanes down in Raleigh. Two years removed from that deadline blockbuster, the actual assets Pittsburgh acquired look incredibly different today.

Evaluating the Prospect Haul

Michael Bunting initially stepped in to provide gritty offensive output, tallying 29 points in 58 games last season. He was suddenly flipped to the Predators last year for Luke Schenn and Tommy Novak to secure long-term salary flexibility.
Vasily Ponomarev was expected to be a core building block, but the 23-year-old forward opted to sign a three-year KHL contract last June. Losing a promising center overseas completely removed an NHL-ready body from the organizational depth chart.
That leaves Koivunen as the absolute focal point of that historic 2024 transaction.
The Finnish winger just torched the AHL, racking up 33 points in 28 games for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton to earn a call-up.
Pittsburgh is also aggressively pushing to lock up Cruz Lucius, another key right-shot asset attached to that massive return.
The 21-year-old just finished a dominant 46-point collegiate senior campaign at Arizona State and is weighing his entry-level contract options today. Management wants him to turn pro immediately and join the minor league roster on an amateur tryout agreement.
Replacing a perennial sniper is an impossible math equation for any modern front office.
Securing legitimate youth is exactly how you retool a roster on the fly.
Tonight's heavy Metropolitan Division tilt is a direct measuring stick to see if those younger pieces can handle the Show.
