The Toronto Maple Leafs' defensive depth has faced challenges in the initial months of the 2023-24 NHL season. In a strategic move on Tuesday, the organization opted to explore the free-agent market.

As per information shared by Nick Barden of The Hockey News, the Toronto Marlies, the Maple Leafs' American Hockey League affiliate, have inked a professional tryout contract (PTO) with 33-year-old defenseman Cameron Gaunce.

Barden reported, "#Marlies have signed defenseman Cameron Gaunce to a PTO.

The 50th overall pick in 2008 showcased his skills in 52 games with the AHL's Ontario Reign last season, tallying two goals and seven assists.

The 33-year-old veteran boasts a career spanning 37 NHL games."

Hailing from Sudbury, Ontario, Gaunce was selected by the Colorado Avalanche in the 2008 draft and has contributed to games in the National Hockey League with various teams, including the Colorado Avalanche, Dallas Stars, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Tampa Bay Lightning.

As the Maple Leafs grapple with multiple injuries on their NHL blue line, speculations are rife that General Manager Brad Treliving is on the brink of orchestrating a trade, with ongoing links to Chris Tanev of the Calgary Flames.
