Toronto Maple Leafs Head Coach Throws Some Shade Towards Willam Nylander
Both Auston Matthews and William Nylander showcase impressive talent, but it appears that the coach currently favors one over the other. When explaining the decision to split Matthews and Nylander, Toronto Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe pointed the finger squarely at Nylander.
Matthews has been on fire this season, scoring an impressive 26 goals in 29 games. Despite Nylander playing alongside him, Keefe expressed concerns about Nylander's inconsistency, suggesting he's not the driving force behind Matthews' scoring success.
"Probably the biggest thing is that we are coming off a couple of losses here. Despite the fact that Matthews has been scoring consistently, I don't know if I would say Willy has been a huge contributor to those goals. I believe that Auston could still continue to be Auston and work well no matter who we have him with."
Nylander faces unrestricted free agency at the end of this season, and Keefe's comments could play a role in Nylander's decision-making. While Matthews leads in the goal department, Nylander boasts more points with 42 (15 G, 27 A).
