Nikolaj Ehlers is set to be a big name in the free agency market this summer, and now, it appears he may be a prime candidate to replace Mitch Marner in Toronto if No. 16 ends up departing the Maple Leafs in free agency.
The 2024/25 campaign ended in disappointment for both the Winnipeg Jets and Toronto Maple Leafs, and this summer will be key for both as they risk losing top stars in free agency.
At this point in time, it's highly likely that Mitch Marner will be off to the free agency market and likely heading to the United States on his next deal, and now, it's been suggested that Nikolaj Ehlers could be the one to replace him in Toronto.
That won't be easy however, as General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff recently noted that the Jets are preparing to make Ehlers a 'Jet for Life' after they drafted him with the No. 9 overall pick back in 2014, as he has tallied a solid 225 goals and 520 points in 674 games played with the team since that point.
However, the chance to play in Toronto is something that is highly tempting to some players, and with both Mitch Marner and potentially John Tavares both on the way out this off-season, they'll have just as much cash to splash as anyone in the entire NHL.
Ultimately, if Marner does decide to depart Toronto, the team will have upwards of $10 million to offer Ehlers, Brad Marchand or Sam Bennett, and if they let Tavares walk too, they would have the money to potentially ink more than one of the top available free agents to a new deal, and if that does happen, expect them to be a major player for Ehlers.
