Former Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Ian Cole has been hit with a fine from the NHL Department of Player Safety for his actions against Steven Stamkos of the Nashville Predators on Saturday.

The Utah Mammoth got their 1st win of the new year on Saturday with a 3-2 OT victory over the Nashville Predators in Music City.
But one member of the Mammoth is going to have to write a check soon because of his actions during the game.
Mammoth defenseman Ian Cole dangerously tripped Predators forward Steven Stamkos, who was also hit with a penalty himself for high sticking. Stamkos was furious with the on-ice referees for the call, but his complaints were to no avail.
Cole has since been fined $2,500 US for his infraction.
Utah's Ian Cole has been fined $2,500 for a dangerous trip against Nashville's Steven Stamkos.
Cole and Stamkos were once teammates with the Tampa Bay Lightning earlier in their careers.
Both teams traded goals in the 1st period from Logan Cooley and Filip Forsberg. Erik Haula scored in the 2nd period for Nashville, only to have Jack McBain score in the 3rd period to tie things.
Dylan Guenther scored the OT GWG for the Mammoth, giving them the extra point on the night.

Ian Cole is in his 2nd year playing with Utah

Cole was taken with the 18th overall pick in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft by the St. Louis Blues while playing for the United States National Development Program.
He then went for 3 years at the University of Notre Dame before starting his career with the AHL's Peoria Rivermen. He made his NHL debut by playing in 26 games in 2010-11.
But in March of 2015, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins for Robert Bortuzzo and a 7th round pick in the 2016 NHL Entry Draft. Cole would win consecutive Stanley Cups with the Penguins in 2016 and 2017.
He's since played for several more teams, seeing time with the Columbus Blue Jackets, Colorado Avalanche, Minnesota Wild, Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Vancouver Canucks, and now the Mammoth.
In 908 career NHL games, Cole has 210 points (35G, 175A).
