Alex Ovechkin is approaching history, and now the NHL have revealed their plans to celebrate it, but fans aren't happy with the plans that they've made.
After his goal on Wednesday night against the Carolina Hurricanes, the Washington Capitals captain now finds himself just three goals away from passing Wayne Gretzky for No. 1 in NHL history.
With seven games remaining in the Capitals season, the believe is that after 39 goals on the season, he's more likely than not to do it this year, with fans and the league eagerly anticipating the history making moment.
Now it's been revealed how the NHL plan on celebrating the moment, with reports revealing that the league have limited Ovechkin's on-ice celebration to just 7 minutes, with many noting that while that's too short in general, 8 minutes would have been much more appropriate unless he's going to be known as The Great 7 moving forward.
Given that he's not just making season history or an irrelevant statistic, but rather passing arguably the greatest player all time in the NHL record in goals, many believed it would be a much longer celebration to recap the incredible run that
Ovechkin has been on throughout his Capitals career, with fans calling out the NHL's major decision.
With so many people wanting to pay tribute to Ovechkin and the incredible support he's received, it's safe to say that many believe the celebration should reflect the moment, and with no one close to catching Ovechkin that's currently active, it's one that's likely to stand for a long time.
Ultimately though, whatever celebration there is for Ovechkin will be much appreciated by The Great 8, who has been fantastic this season even with all of the attention on his record chase, and with the team having the chance to honour him after the on-ice celebration, it's safe to say we'll see plenty more than just those 7 minutes.
