Wayne Gretzky Reveals What He'll Buy Ovechkin If He Hits 900 Goals

The Washington Capitals fell to the New York Islanders by a score of 4-1 today but that didn't stop NHL history from happening.

Alex Ovechkin scored the Capitals' lone goal, breaking his tie with Wayne Gretzky for the most in a career in NHL history with 895.

After the goal, the celebration was on. There was a special ceremony right then and there in the middle of the second period as Wayne Gretzky, Gary Bettman, and members of Ovechkin's family joined him on the ice to celebrate his historic accomplishment.

It even included a special video segment played on the jumbotron that featured a clip from none other than Sidney Crosby, who congratulated his longtime rival.

Gretzky himself made a speech on the ice congratulating Ovi on his achievement, wishing him the best for the remainder of his career.

He also referenced the fact that Gordie Howe's wife got his wife a gift when he broke the record at the time, and his wife carried on that tradition by getting Ovi's wife something special too.

But that's not all. The great one also made a promise to Ovechkin if he hits career goal 900, which will certainly happen at some point in the coming years as Alex remains under contract with the Capitals for one more season after this one.

Gretzky was caught on a hit mic saying that if Ovechkin gets his 900th goal, he will buy him a car!

Certainly Ovechkin is in no need of a car given his lengthy career making millions of dollars every season in the NHL, but it is still a sweet gesture.
