Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had a special video message to Alex Ovechkin soon after he broke Wayne Gretzky's goal-scoring record.

Wayne Gretzky's NHL goal scoring record, previously thought to be unbeatable, is no more.
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin is now the leading goal scorer in National Hockey League history, scoring the 895th goal of his Hall of Fame career this afternoon against the New York Islanders.
Soon after the goal was scored and Gretzky's record smashed, Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby had a special video message for his longtime opponent.
Ovi, it's been an honour to compete against you all these years. Over that time, you've accomplished so many milestones - but this one was probably thought to be impossible and you found a way to do it. Congratulations on scoring the most goals in NHL history. I hope you have a great night celebrating with your friends and family - congratulations.
Crosby's teammate Evgeni Malkin, a countryman of Ovechkin's, posted a tribute of his own while speaking his native Russian language:
Ovechkin and Crosby have battled one another repeatedly over the years in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Crosby and the Penguins beat the Capitals 3 times in 2009, 2016 and 2017.
Meanwhile, Ovechkin and the Capitals would finally beat Crosby's Penguins in 2018 on their journey to the franchise's 1st ever Stanley Cup.
While there have been numerous on-ice battles, the two Hall of Fame athletes have tremendous mutual respect for one another, a great element of sportsmanship in the heat of competition.
While Crosby won't break Gretzky's goal record, he himself can move up the list of all-time points scored; he's only 41 behind his former Penguins teammate and fellow icon Mario Lemiux in total points scored.
