Alexander Georgiev played a whopping 62 regular season games last season, because the Avalanche had no real options for a backup. In the era of load management, no team believes their goalies should have to play that many games before the playoffs, and so now it appears that the Avalanche will to trade options for a solid backup after bad news about their planned goalie, Patel Francouz.
According to reports from Frank Seravalli, Francouz, who missed most of last season due to a nagging injury, still has not recovered from offseason surger to fix the issue.
The Avalanche still do have a few goalies within their system, but none with significant NHL experience that a team of their caliber is comfortable with. Now, GM Chris MacFarland will be speaking with other teams to see what he garner through trade. One interesting option for Colorado could be the Montreal Canadiens, who currently have a number of experienced backup goalies in Casey DeSmith, Jake Allan, and Sam Montembeault. At the moment, it seems like DeSmith would be the one preferred to be moved on the Habs side, and if Colorado is willing to make the deal, it'll be a good fit for both teams.
