The NHL waiver wire was quiet on Thursday, but on Friday it was active once again. According to Chris Johnston of TSN, the Edmonton Oilers have placed defender Markus Niemelainen on waivers. The Oilers hope to assign him to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Bakersfield Condors.
Niemelainen, just 25, played in 23 games for the Edmonton Oilers last year, where he didn't record a points. He also played 30 games for the AHL's Bakersfield Condors where he tallied 7 points (two goals, five assists), 18 penalty minutes and was a plus-four.
