Leafs rumoured to be working on a substantial trade with the New York Islanders
If you've been paying attention to the hockey rumours all summer, you'll know that Toronto Maple Leafs winger William Nylander has been involved in a number of possible trade rumours and it all stems back to his lofty contract demands.
Nylander is reportedly seeking a long-term contract with an AAV in excess of $10M per season. Obviously, with the Matthews, Marner and Tavares contracts all exceeding that number, the Leafs simply cannot afford another $10M+ contract on the books.
According to "Eklund" of HockeyBuzz.com, the Leafs may be closer than ever to dealing the Swedish winger. Per Eklund, the Leafs are believed to be working on a deal that would send Nylander to the New York Islanders.
Not a lot of information is known about the rumoured deal, but Eklund has indicated that the deal will involve Jean-Gabriel Pageau, likely for salary balancing purposes. Since Nylander and Pageau is not a balanced deal as a 1-for-1, the package would likely also involve another significant piece and a draft pick heading from Long Island to Toronto.
Nylander, 27, appeared in all 82 games for the Leafs last season, scoring 40 goals and adding 47 assists for a total of 87 points.
