Report: Patrick Kane decides where he's signing in 2023-24
On Thursday, former Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews confirmed that his plan for the 2023-24 season is to take some time off to focus on his health before returning for the 2024-25 NHL season. While we finally have some clarity on Toews' more immediate plans, we don't yet know what the future will hold for his long-time teammate Patrick Kane. Thankfully, one of Kane's friends has reportedly confirmed that Kane plans to play next season and has already selected his new team.
Per rumour reporter Eklund of Hockey Buzz, a close friend of Kane's has revealed that the 3-time Stanley Cup winner will play for a contending team next season - and he already has a deal on the table.
"He will play for a contender. He already knows the team too." - personal friend of Patrick Kane on his plans for next season
Kane spent 16 years with the Blackhawks, winning Stanley Cups in 2010, 2013 and 2015, before agreeing to waive his NMC last season, leaving Chicago for a trade to the Rangers. There's been plenty of speculation that Kane may opt to return to New York for another kick at the can in 2023-24, but there are a number of other teams who may be in the mix here that might make some sense for the 34-year-old.
Previous rumours, right up to last season, had linked to teams outside of his home State of New York. Kane was linked to the Colorado Avalanche, Edmonton Oilers and Toronto Maple Leafs at points last season, but I'd have to imagine that his hometown Buffalo Sabres are a dark horse here as well.
The Sabres may not be a guaranteed contender, but they have improved over the past few seasons and could challenge for a playoff spot this season with the Boston Bruins appearing to have taken an enormous step back this summer.
Kane had surgery this summer and is currently going through rehab to get himself back to 100%.
