Oilers' Connor McDavid suffered an embarrassing 6-2 loss last night in a beer league, which prompted Panthers fans to torch and roast him in wild online comments.
Connor McDavid, a native of nearby Richmond Hill, skated minutes away from his childhood home. Leon Draisaitl traveled from Edmonton to join him.
They were already losing 4-0 after the first period, and it ended 6-2
But what started out as innocent fun quickly turned sour. After one period, their team was behind 4-0. At the final buzzer, they were handed a humiliating 6-2 rout loss, by a beer league team.
Game highlights quickly made the rounds online, and Florida Panthers fans had a field day.
Fresh off of watching their team win back-to-back Stanley Cups, including a victory over the Oilers a few weeks back, Panthers fans roasted McDavid for being held off the score sheet in a meaningless summer game.
Many joked he was still in "mid-June form," a reference to his inability to produce in the Cup Final.
The jokes continued. Some compared the help McDavid received in the beer league contest to the Oilers' playoff run, where, once again, the supporting cast couldn't rise to the occasion.
It's an ugly look for Edmonton's stars and a reminder that unless GM Stan Bowman can bring in actual assistance sooner rather than later, the Oilers' title window could close as quickly as it opened.
Panthers fans have every right to chirp, because after all, they're the champs, and they deserved it.
