On Monday, Cancucks General Manager Patrik Allvin announced that the Canucks had signed unrestricted free agent Jake DeBrusk to a 7-year contract worth $38,500,000 ($5.5 million AAV). Several teams were connected to DeBrusk including the Edmonton Oilers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Los Angeles Kings, David Pagnotta said back in May.
Ultimately, DeBrusk chose Vancouver and has lots of opportunity ahead of him. DeBrusk will either player with Elias Pettersson or J.T. Miller's line and during his media availability on Monday, he took a subtle jab at the Bruins and other teams that didn't sign him, saying that he wanted to go somewhere he could win.
The Boston Bruins saw some success in the postseason during his tenure there. In his second NHL season, the team advanced to the Final but was defeated by the St. Louis Blues. DeBrusk would only advance so far; Boston has since received three second-round exits and two first-round exits.
DeBrusk joins a deep forward group in Vancouver that is better than the one he played for in Boston, giving him a chance to win the Stanley Cup. It is now his responsibility to show that he is worthy of the financial commitment Vancouver is making to him and to return to his former self, scoring over 20 goals a year.
