The Edmonton Oilers have received a firm deadline to get Leon Draisaitl signed to a new contract by his agent.

It must be a bit of a wild couple of months for Leon Draisaitl of the Edmonton Oilers. After a terrible start to the 2023-24 season, Draisaitl came back and went
went all the way to game 7 of the 2024 Stanley Cup Final before being eliminated by the Florida Panthers. Now, with little room to breathe, comes the question over his new contract. A new article shows his agency playing some hardball.
In an interview with a German media outlet Eishockeynews.de, Jiri Poner of Spectrum Hockey--who negotiates Draisaitl's contracts together with Mike Liut from Octagon Hockey-- shared that while his client still has another year remaining on his current deal, he wants a new deal done before training camp gets underway for 2024-25.
"But the ball is on Edmonton's side. There's no hurry yet, but either it happens quickly, i.e. by the end of August, or it doesn't work out at all. It also remains to be seen: Does Edmonton really want him or not? Leon holds all the cards."
While his quote gives Edmonton very little time to get Draisaitl's signature on a new contract, Poner added he's confident it will get done.
"Very confident that there will be an agreement with Edmonton in the end that both sides will be happy with."

The last season of Draisaitl's current contract has a cap hit of $8.5 million. Poner told the interviewer that he remembered the "s--t storm [Former Oilers GM} Peter Chiarelli had to endure when he gave Leon the contract," but firmly believes it was a steal for Edmonton in the long run.
