Marc-Andre Fleury had another solid season in 2024/25, but even after representing Team Canada, he reveals that he's still headed into retirement.
The career of Marc-Andre Fleury is quickly coming to an end, and after stellar runs with Pittsburgh, Vegas, Chicago and Minnesota, he'll retire as one of the best goaltenders to ever play in the National Hockey League.
However, rumours have begun circulating after the veteran joined Team Canada at the 2025 IIHF World Championship, but at 40-years of age, the veteran has now confirmed that he's getting too old to play on in the NHL, reiterating that he's officially done after this tournament.
«No, no. I'm done.
I debated it last year. I didn't have to play as much this season, which made it a little easier on my body. But trust me, every time I played this season, I felt pretty old the next morning. I hadn't felt that before. Age caught up.»
In poetic fashion, Fleury wraps up his career on the ice alongside
Sidney Crosby, one of his favourite teammates of all time, with whom he won three Stanley Cups, but even after promising performances this season, he simply doesn't have enough left in the tank to go on.
Many see Fleury as an all-time great, while others look at a good goaltender that simply had some fantastic longevity in the NHL, but regardless, he will be remembered as one of the games all-time great characters.
Representing Team Canada at the IIHF World Championship was always a goal for Fleury, and for those that have watched his career blossom over the years, the final few games of his career will certainly be bittersweet as Canada chases yet another gold medal.
