The Penguins have decided to go with Tristan Jarry as the starter for tonight's historic game vs. the Islanders, as New York is set to counter with Ilya Sorokin.

The Pittsburgh Penguins are set to play in their home opener tonight against the New York Islanders. It will be Islanders' Ilya Sorokin matching up against the Penguins' Tristan Jarry tonight.
Why didn't Muse go back to Arturs Silovs, who had a 25-save shutout Tuesday? he provided some details.
"It's so early. We just want to get everybody going, get different guys going," the rookie head coach Muse explained. "Tristan, especially the late part of training camp, he was really trending there in a really good direction. We look at all things. We went into it thinking we'd like to get both guys in there early. That's what we're doing."

Jarry had a 16-12-6 record last season with a career-low .893 save percentage, as well as having two stints in the American Hockey League. He also passed through waivers once.
Despite another season of struggles for the past All-Star, the Penguins kept Jarry around for the 2025-26 season, though they did bring in a new challenger for Jarry in Silovs.

Filip Hallander Will Play His First Penguins Game of the Season Tonight

A new forward will also enter the Penguins' lineup on Thursday. Muse confirmed that Filip Hallander will play his first game with the Penguins in nearly three years. The 25-year-old played the past two seasons back home in his native Sweden.
"I think he got more and more comfortable [in camp]," Muse said. "If you look at the later exhibition games that he was in, I feel like he was really at the point where he was starting to play his game. There's an adjustment coming back over here. The game is a little bit different. Obviously, he's played in North America before."

It will also be a historic night as the 2025 first overall pick, Matthew Schaefer, who is 18 years and 34 days old, will make history when he takes the ice tonight. He will be the youngest first-overall defenseman to ever make their NHL debut.
The Penguins and Islanders are scheduled to face off just after 7 p.m. in what is sure to be a thrilling contest.
