The Toronto Maple Leafs have placed Pittsburgh native Ty Voit on waivers, who was once a draft pick of Kyle Dubas, prompting many to wonder if a return is possible.
Both players had one year remaining on their entry-level deals and were set to become restricted free agents in 2026.
If not claimed within 24 hours, their contracts will be terminated, and they'll become unrestricted free agents, forfeiting their remaining salary.
Kyle Dubas selected Ty Voit in Toronto back during the 2021 draft
Ty Voit, 22, was a fifth-round Toronto pick in 2021 and made an impression in the OHL after having his draft year wiped out by the COVID-19 shutdown.
He completed his junior career with an eye-popping 105 points in 67 games with the Sarnia Sting in 2022-23.
However, his professional hockey transition was also disrupted by injuries, as he was limited to just five ECHL contests in 2023-24 with Newfoundland, scoring eight points.
While he began in that manner, he did not crack the AHL roster and was demoted back down to the ECHL's Cincinnati Cyclones. His production also declined there, with 37 points in 63 games.
At 5'9", Voit is still a developmental prospect as a crafty playmaker and can get an AHL deal, even if an NHL opportunity doesn't materialize.
A potential fit would be the Pittsburgh Penguins, as he is from the city and was originally drafted by Kyle Dubas, the current general manager of the Penguins.
