Mikko Rantanen and Jamie Benn Break Silence Over Oettinger Being Pulled Early in Elimination Game
After making it through two very tough series, the Dallas Stars fell in four straight games, losing 4-1 to the Edmonton Oilers, once again falling short at the final hurdle before the Stanley Cup Finals.
Game 5 at home was one of the most shocking losses we've seen in a long time for this team, with Peter DeBoer making the shock call to pull Jake Oettinger after two early goals, as the team would go on to fall 6-3.
Unsurprisingly, everyone involved in that situation was furious, and while some could be quick to blame DeBoer for the call, star forward
Mikko Rantanen took the blame for the way this team played in front of Oettinger.
"I don't know. Coaches make decisions. We were not ready. We were not helping Jake at all on the first two goals, so that's on us, not on Jake.
Rantanen wasn't the only one disgusted at how the Stars came out to play in a must-win game on home ice, as captain
Jamie Benn was also frustrated after the game at the way things started.
"Pretty much wake up. Start playing. Kind of left Jakey out to dry there early on. That's pretty much the message. It's not my call."
After such a tough loss, the room was nothing short of dejected following a fantastic season in Dallas, and while no one was quick to blame DeBoer for the decision, it's safe to say that it's going to have a ripple effect in this organization for quite some time to come.
At the end of the day, Oettinger and the Stars simply didn't come to play, and now they'll have to navigate an off-season full of questions and changes as they look to finally get over the hump, but for now it's pure disappointment in Dallas.
