The JJ Peterka sweepstakes ended on Wednesday with a shock trade to Utah, but that only came after the Sabres turned down a better deal from Minnesota.

After some speculation, the Buffalo Sabres decided to pull the trigger on a trade involving JJ Peterka, but the only problem is, the return from the Utah Mammoth was highly underwhelming.
In the deal, Buffalo got back Michael Kesselring and Josh Doan, and while there's some talent there, for a 23-year old coming off of a 68 point season, the belief is they should have got more.
Now, Michael Russo has revealed that indeed they did get offered more (depending on your view of the pieces involved), as he reports that the Minnesota Wild offered Marco Rossi, as well as either another roster player or a combination of picks/prospects to land the German star.
"The Wild offered center Marco Rossi as the starting point in any package [for Peterka] and were willing to include another roster player and/or prospects and picks."
It's unclear exactly why Buffalo would have turned this deal down, as Rossi immediately becomes either the 1 or 2C for the Sabres, giving them great depth with Josh Norris, Rossi and Ryan McLeod.
Now, we know that the Wild are being aggressive in looking to deal Rossi, and while they may not be doing so for every available piece out there, with the Penguins potentially looking to move Bryan Rust or Rickard Rakell, this should bode well for the potential pursuit of Rossi.
It's already been confirmed that Rossi's agent believes that the Wild don't value him the way the team should, and with the Penguins looking to find a successor to Sidney Crosby, Rossi makes perfect sense in that role.
With the Wild trying to get better, it wouldn't be a surprise if they offered Rossi in several different packages to other available players, but with the team willing to move him, the Penguins may need to move fast to make it happen.
Ultimately, it's a shock that Buffalo didn't take the offer from Minnesota, as Rossi is already proven to be a great piece at the top level and fills a need for this team, but at the end of the day, this should be good for Pittsburgh as they continue to weigh up pushing for Rossi this summer.
