The Devils have placed former first-round defenseman Dennis Cholowski on waivers today, following the team's last two blowout losses to the Isles and Pens.

The New Jersey Devils have placed defenseman Dennis Cholowski on waivers with the intention of assigning him to their American Hockey League affiliate in Utica.
Cholowski, 27, has appeared in 15 games for the Devils this season and recorded one assist while serving primarily in a depth role on the blue line.
If he clears waivers, he will report to Utica, where he is expected to provide experienced support on defense.

What Dennis Cholowski has done since being selected in the first round

A former first-round pick, Cholowski was selected 20th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2016 NHL Draft. Despite that, he has struggled to secure a permanent role at the NHL level.
Over his career, Cholowski has played 171 NHL games with New Jersey, the New York Islanders, Seattle Kraken, Washington Capitals, and Detroit Red Wings, a true journeyman, totaling 13 goals, 28 assists, and 41 points.
This Devils' move follows two blowout losses to both the Islanders and the Penguins.
Cholowski is a puck-moving defenseman whose game is built around skating, transition play, and offensive instincts.
He is most effective when play is structured, and he can use his mobility to move the puck quickly rather than defend extended cycles, so when the game starts to pick up, it can hurt him.

Why Dennis Cholowski has been unable to secure a permanent NHL role

Cholowski has shown flashes at both the NHL and AHL levels, especially on the power play, but his lack of consistency and defensive reliability have limited his ability to secure a long-term NHL role, which is why he has suited up for multiple teams.
He mostly serves as depth for teams, and he can step into a lineup when needed and help stabilize puck movement. He definitely has not lived up to the hype of a first-round pick.
Update: Noah Gregor has also been placed on waivers by the Florida Panthers
