Controversial former NHL forward Matt Cooke, who infamously injured multiple players during his playing career, has found a new job in coaching with the BCHL's Vernon Vipers.

Former NHL forward Matt Cooke is no stranger to controversy, as he infamously injured multiple players during his playing days, perhaps no more notable than his brutal blindside hit on Marc Savard while with the Pittsburgh Penguins in early 2010.
Cooke, who last played in the NHL for the Minnesota Wild in 2015, has already gotten into the world of coaching with the Newfoundland Growlers in the ECHL until they had to cease operations.
Now, Cooke has taken over as the head coach and general manager of the BCHL's Vernon Vipers.
He released a statement expressing his excitement over his new role and desire to have them in title contention.
I'm incredibly honoured to be named the next Head Coach and General Manager of the Vernon Vipers. The Vipers are a team with a rich and storied history, and it's a privilege to join an organization that has meant so much to the community in Vernon - and to the BCHL and junior hockey across Canada. I'm excited to be a part of rebuilding a culture of excellence here in Vernon and returning this organization to being a perennial contender for the Fred Page Cup.

Vipers owner Tom Glen was equally excited about the hire.
This is a special day for our organization. Matt brings tremendous experience as both a player and a coach. His work ethic is second to none, and we are absolutely thrilled to welcome him to the Vernon Vipers.

Cooke was taken 144th overall by the Vancouver Canucks in the 1997 NHL Draft, and he played for Vancouver, the Washington Capitals, the Penguins, and the Wild. He had 398 points (167G, 231A) and 1,135 PIM.
