Dan Muse Discusses Why the Penguins Decided to Waive Veteran Defenseman Ryan Graves
Earlier today, the Pittsburgh Penguins made several polarizing moves including waiving Ryan Graves now head coach Dan Muse has discussed those moves.
The Pittsburgh Penguins continue to be a team between being able to contend and having to fully rebuild and today they took another step toward building for the future.
With final roster cuts needed over the next couple of days the Penguins made several big roster decisions including placing veteran Ryan Graves on waivers.
Graves landed in Pittsburgh as a massive free agent addition expected to be part of the new core taking the mantle from Sidney Crosby and Kris Letang.
Unfortunately, during his tenure in Pittsburgh, Graves was unable to find success and struggled mightily to live up to the lofty expectations set for him.
Now, after waiving Graves, head coach Dan Muse spoke about what went into making such a difficult decision.
Dan Muse Discusses Why the Penguins Placed Ryan Graves on Waivers
During a press conference after the news was announced Muse was specifically asked about the decision to put Graves on waivers.
Obviously, it was a very tough decision. It's not one that anybody takes lightly He had plenty of good moments throughout camp. It was a competitive camp, a lot of defensemen.
We knew this process would be extremely difficult and it was. We just felt like the eight that are with us as of today, this was the group that we felt best suited going forward.

With this quote, it seems as though the Penguins are committed to the remaining group of defensemen on the roster heading into 2025-26.
Now, the Penguins will wait to see if another team will claim Graves off of waivers or if he will be heading to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in the AHL.
