Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson talked about the embarrassing blunder he committed that led to a goal against by the Toronto Maple Leafs as part of what was their ninth loss in the last 10 games.
After a stronger start to the season than anyone would have expected, the Pittsburgh Penguins have fallen back down to Earth in a major way and have now lost nine of their last 10 games.
Tonight, they lost 6-3 to the Toronto Maple Leafs, who managed to break a three game losing streak.
During the game, defenseman Erik Karlsson was guilty of a blunder in the second period when he tried to pull the puck back on a deke just inside the blue line around Maple Leafs forward Steven Lorentz, who stole the puck and raced down the ice on a breakaway and eventually beat goalie Stuart Skinner for a 3-1 Leafs lead.
Karlsson talked about the mistake and said that "it stinks" but that it's a play he can eliminate from his toolbox.
He did a good job staying with me. I kind of ran out of options and lost an edge and fell and again, they capitalized on it. It stinks. And it's obviously stuff like that you can eliminate. But then at the same time, things can happen, you got to move on. And like I said, I don't think we caught any breaks today, and they caught all of them, and they made us pay for it. - Erik Karlsson
Erik Karlsson Was The Subject Of Multiple Trade Rumours
Before the season, the Penguins were reportedly trying to trade multiple players, not only forwards Rickard Rakell and Bryan Rust but Karlsson.
But Karlsson's hefty AAV (average annual value) of $11.5 million naturally makes it more difficult to move him.
So far this year, Karlsson has 26 points (3G, 23A) in 36 games.
